Hobbies and Joys
I quit smoking two and a half months ago. It wasn’t a New Year’s resolution or anything, just budget cuts. But now that the crisis is largely over, I still haven’t taken it back up. I never liked the taste anyhow, and I rather like that my lungs don’t feel so heavy anymore.
However, recently, I have started missing being a smoker. All the negative bits aside, it was something to do while walking to and from classes, waiting for buses, or on break. It was a time-killer, and also a social activity as smokers tend to smoke together. Mostly, though, it was something to do with my hands, which is what I’ve really been missing. I have busy hands. Two of them, in fact. And when I’m not doing anything with them, they find things to do themselves. Cancer sticks kept them occupied, but not so anymore, and I’ve really been wanting something for them to play at.
Today, I went through some of my things in my junk box. I was looking for a handheld mirror to cut my hair with, but instead I found an item I hadn’t much used since high school: my yo-yo. Yes, ladies and gents, in my teenage years I was quite handy with a yo-yo. I kept one in my pocket at all times, and brought it out whenever I was walking, waiting, or just plain felt like it. I am planning on starting that habit again.
Some people chew gum to get over smoking. I yo-yo.
Another little known fact from my yesteryear hobbies: I’m also very skilled with balloon animals. Perhaps that hobby shall find some play in the near future as well?
